Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia urged doctors at the Province's provincial and district hospitals to avoid referring patients to Cebu City, especially those whose cases are manageable locally.

She said this in a meeting on Friday, May 22, with doctors of the Cebu Provincial Hospital-Bogo City where one of the issues tackled is the rising number of Covid-19 patients admitted in Cebu City hospitals who are residents of the Province.

To name a few, patients from the towns of Carmen and Madridejos, both in northern Cebu, were Covid-19 positive.

The patient from Madridejos was taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) where she gave birth while the patient from Carmen, who died, was referred to VSMMC after a motorcycle accident. Swab samples were taken while admitted at the hospital.

To avoid possible hospital-acquired Covid-19 infections, Garcia directed the doctors in the Capitol-run hospitals to perform minor operations as well as cesarean delivery.

“Ang referral kay kadtong di nato makaya. Ang kaluy-an nako ang pobre dad-on diri (Cebu City) unya magka Covid, three times ang bayranan,” she said.

She added that this can also help allay the worries and fears of the people in the Province of those coming from Cebu City where most Covid-19 cases in Cebu Island were recorded.

Moreover, those who only showed symptoms of Covid-19 will be swabbed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Garcia said.

“Symptoms-based ta. That’s with the blessing of Department of Health (DOH)-7 Director Jaime Bernadas. He agrees with me,” she said.

To define the guidelines for the swabbing, the governor will hold a separate meeting with the heads of the four provincial hospitals in the cities of Carcar, Danao and Bogo, and Balamban town.

She will also ask the hospital chiefs to boost the immune systems of their patients by applying the health regimen promoted by the Provincial Government.

Meanwhile, from May 22 to May 23, 74 positive cases were recorded from the three sub-national laboratories for Covid-19 in Cebu.

These laboratories are the VSMMC and Cebu TB Reference Laboratory Molecular Facility for Covid-19 Testing (CTRL-MFCT), both operated by DOH 7, and privately-owned Allegiant Regional Care Hospital (ARCH) in Lapu-Lapu City.

Of this number, 21 are from the Province of Cebu — 20 new cases and one repeat test —  with most of the cases from Talisay City. Cebu City recorded additional 47 cases while the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu had three cases each. (Mylen Manto)
