Cebu Province’s town mayors honor and remember the lives of the late ex-Dumanjug Mayor Nelson Gamaliel Garcia and the late Barili Mayor Marlon Garcia who died September 1 and 6, respectively.
The mayors also expressed their deepest sorrow and condolences to the family both mayors have left behind. The fallen mayors are both brothers of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Deputy Speaker Pablo John “PJ” Garcia.
The League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Cebu Chapter passed on September 18 the “resolution honoring and remembering the lives of Mayor Nelson Gamaliel Fiel Garcia and Mayor Marlon Garcia for their exemplary dedication and service to the Province of Cebu and their remarkable contributions to the league, benefitting the lives of the Cebuano people.”
In the resolution, the LMP Cebu Chapter recalled the service both mayors gave to Cebu.
Nelson served as mayor of Dumanjug town for two terms from 2010 to 2016 and as LMP Cebu president in 2013.
He also gave honor to the entire country as the first Cebuano to be elected as Vice President for Internal Affairs of the LMP National Directorate in 2010.
“Mayor Nelson Garcia, during his tenure as Mayor of the Municipality of Dumanjug, faithfully and conscientiously dedicated himself to the work of improving and seeking betterment of the lives of the people of Dumanjug, bringing forth economic development and progress to the town,” the resolution read.
Meanwhile, Marlon started serving the people of Barili town as vice mayor from 2010 to 2013 and later on as mayor for two terms from 2016 until his untimely death.
He was also able to carry the LMP members’ concerns on empowerment and autonomy as the League’s Vice President for Internal Affairs in 2019.
LMP shared that under Marlon’s leadership, Barili became one of the outstanding LGUs in the Our Cebu Program and received the distinction of being one of the most child-friendly LGUs in the Province.
The mayors also recalled how Marlon was much loved by the Barilinhons for serving them with humility and selflessness and working tirelessly even amidst the Covid-19 pandemic to put Barili town’s mark as a tourism and health and wellness destination in Cebu.
“The passing of Mayor Nelson and Mayor Marlon Garcia is a tremendous loss to the Province of Cebu, and the profound sorrow of their passing is personally felt by their fellow mayors, deeply affecting the lives of the Cebuanos whom they served,” the Cebu mayors expressed. (Press Release)
